Your faithful correspondent was fully awake in the middle of last night because I have lunar insomnia, so there I sat, drinking coffee and watching the Sky News morning show.
A Complete Unknown has been released in England, so the lively discussion for a segment between the news anchors, a Warwickshire professor, and a print journalist was “Is Bob Dylan As Good As Shakespeare?”
The perky professor sported overalls and an American-in-British-academia accent. I liked her. The subject is treated with a light gravity.
I never miss England quite so much as l do when watching Sky News or even when there’s a Royal scandal or some such extra fol-de-rol.
The Sky discussion reached an agreed-upon conclusion that no, Bob Dylan is not “as good as Shakespeare,” no one is, but it doesn’t matter…because he’s Bob Dylan. And Dylan is as meaningful a cultural figure as you’ll find in the 20th and 21st centuries.
But you know who isn’t as good as Shakespeare or Bob Dylan?
